At the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, the pile of applications for concealed weapons permits is stacking up.

“Just extremely busy. There’s really no downtime,” says Karie Maxwell, who handles the permits. “We’ve more than doubled what we’ve normally done.”

Just in the last couple of months. And the Sheriff thinks he knows why. He says he noticed the spike in CCW applications right after the Newtown, Connecticut shooting and all of the talk last month of stricter gun laws.

“So I think you have two factors taking place at the same time. And many people are making the decisions that they would like to have some sort of personal protection in the event something bad happens to them,” says Ken Furlong, Sheriff of Carson City.
