At 43, Catherine Soto doesn’t want to take any chances when it comes to her safety.

So last year, Soto enrolled in her first Self-Defense and Safety Seminar, sponsored by the Police Department and designed especially for women. It was held at the Redlands Community Center.

Soto says she learned basic skills necessary to defend herself should the need arise.

“I think it’s really important for women to be able to defend themselves,” she said. “It may never happen, but in the odd chance that it does, this class is amazing in teaching women the basic skills and avoid being taken. ”

On Saturday, Soto will enroll in her second class. Officer Alex Paredes is planning the class, open to ages 13 and older.
