A massive backlog in concealed carry applications is leading Kentucky State Police and Indiana State Police to streamline the process for reviewing requests for a license to carry a handgun.
Kentucky officials saw firearm training certificates, one of the steps required to obtain a license, increase from 4,355 in December to 12,685 in January. The police agency does not release monthly figures on concealed carry licenses.
In Indiana, state police received an average of about 5,200 applications per month before December. But that month, the number jumped to 13,954 , and in January, the number increased to 23,079.
