In North Carolina, Surry Community College’s Self Defense for Women class could rightly be called a college of hard knocks, teaching participants it is better to give than receive.

Participant Leanne Gardner, like many of her classmates, was taking self-defense for the first time and was motivated by a desire to feel safer. She said the first night of the course contained a lot of lecture with some hands-on practice of defense techniques.
