A retired man shot and killed an escaped prisoner, Rodney Long, who was suspected of shooting an Iowa sheriff while law enforcement searched for him.

Long broke into a retired couple’s home and was armed with a handgun.  After about four hours, homeowner Jerome Mauderly, 71, shot Long with a shotgun in the kitchen.

Mauderly’s wife Carolyn, 66, called 911 and said that her husband had shot an intruder.

Long was in prison for burglary when he climbed a fence and escaped from the prison.  He was scheduled for release in September 2014.
