In Guam, kids are learning defensive techniques, to fend off bullies under the teachings of Sensei Romeo Tabano. He refers such technique the “gentleman’s fighting art” of aikido.
October is Guam Bullying Prevention month, and government agencies throughout the island are hosting activities that raise awareness about bullying. Tabano said children can learn not only how to defend themselves through aikido, but the practice prevents bullying behavior from developing.
Confidence, respect through martial arts, he said his students acquire a “stew” of self-confidence and respect for others.
“Martial arts is needed for kids, especially young kids,” Tabano said.
