Live Oak Police Chief Ken Evans at the Operation Grinch launch, prior to the start of the Christmas shopping season. Police officers from Live Oak, Universal City and Selma were on hand for a show of unity in the effort to protect holiday shoppers.

Shoppers need to follow a few safety precautions when shopping, he said, that will cut down on a criminal’s attempts to break into a vehicle.

“Don’t store anything in your car when you are shopping, not even an empty box or an empty store bag,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s empty or not; if they can see it, then there’s a problem. They don’t know that it’s empty.

“If it’s out of sight, it’s out of mind. Otherwise, they want you to do their job, by providing that crime of opportunity. And when you do that, they are going to capitalize.”
