Orange County Sheriff Jerry L. Demings reminded gun owners of the importance of gun safety, and securing firearms from children inside their homes. He urged gun enthusiasts to pick up a free gun-safety kit — which includes a gun-locking device, key and gun safety instructions — from one of his six substations.
This initiative is a part of the nationwide Project ChildSafe program, which helps ensure that gun-owners are safely storing their firearms. Sheriff Demings said he hopes this effort will drive home the importance of keeping guns out of the hands of children, and thus preventing future youth gun violence and accidental shootings.
“Access to unlocked and loaded weapons multiplies a child’s chances of injury or death by three to five times,” Demings said. “What we’re trying to do is protect these young people.”
