Richard Romano read on more story he didn’t like; about a woman being sexually assaulted.

“There are assaults all the time in Bozeman and the Gallatin County,” Romano said. “You cannot believe all the spousal abuse.”

So after reading the article and listening to a police scanner at night, Romano decided he wanted to help women.

A machinist by trade, Romano has always been creative. In his mid-70s, Romano still makes several important instruments everyday. He creates antennas for the top three airplane manufacturers in the county. The government has contracted with Romano to make satellite antennas for operations in Middle Eastern wars.

Working from a garage-turned-workshop in Belgrade, Romano tinkered with his tools until he came up with the self-defense cue baton.
