At San Joaquin Delta College 17 students showed up to learn self-defense skills. In a time when campus safety concerns draw more attention than ever before, few students have taken advantage of opportunities to learn how to deal with an attack or assault – or better yet, how to prevent one from happening in the first place.
“It’s sad,” said Tareka McClellan, who serves on Delta’s Associated Student Body Government.
Delta police say there is no statistical evidence of an overall increase in campus crime. But social media and instant messaging alerts have amplified those crimes that do occur, generating mainstream media attention and leaving the public, perhaps, with the impression that the campus is no longer safe.
