In Joplin, Missouri a local martial arts instructor Gage Hanlon offered free self-defense classes for children in the area. Hanlon, taught four classes earlier at Southwest Missouri Bank’s Community Center in Joplin.
Hanlon went through what kids should do if they are grabbed either by the wrist or collar of their shirt. He also gave tips on how children can avoid dangerous situations. Hanlon says, “My hopes from this is that we raise that community awareness, that we take those steps where we’re in that mind set of lets prevent these things from happening instead of waiting until they do happen before we do something about it.”
Cindy Fox, a grandmother who attended the class with her grandchildren says,”Kids need to learn this because of all the things that are going on now with the kids being abducted and stuff. I think they need to be able to protect themselves and against bullying too.”
