The owners of Carolina Pistol Instruction in Churchland, are ensuring college students have knowledge of self-defense which is just as important as buying a new laptop or registering for classes.
The couple will offer College Safety 101 on March 17 and 18, 2014. The program is a two-day, all-inclusive, self-defense class that is a combination of awareness, preparedness and hands-on training.
Marvin Nance said he thought of offering self-defense classes when his daughter, Meckala, left to go to college two years ago. He realized there were many things she needed to know for her protection, other than the normal words of wisdom from an anxious parent. He thought she needed practiced self-defense skills and a deeper understanding of the thought processes of predators.
“You may have a girl that has never been away from home, and all of a sudden she is thrust into life headfirst,” Nance said. “As a parent, we worry. We hear stories about girls going out clubbing and something happens. Going out with friends is part of growing up, but another part of growing up is being safe. Everyone thinks it won’t happen to them.”
