Personal safety and defense is important to everyone, but not everyone can carry a firearm for protection. For example, teenagers not yet old enough to carry a gun still need options to defend themselves when they’re out alone. There are also many facilities that ban firearms on their premises—schools, government properties and even many private businesses. Not to mention jurisdictions where concealed carry is completely out of the question. In these situations, less-lethal defense can be a lifesaver. Ruger had this sort of need in mind when they developed an excellent line of pepper sprays and stun guns.
Ruger’s standard model of pepper spray is sold as both the Tornado 3-in-1 and as the Ruger Stealth. This is a law enforcement-strength pepper spray that rates at 2 million Scoville heat units. That’s about a thousand times hotter than Sriracha sauce. It has a 15-foot spray range and includes a convenient belt clip for easy carrying. These models come in a unique safety holder designed to reduce the chances of accidental discharge. To access the spray, you slide the safety door down and push a release button. The sprayer then pops free in your hand, already in firing position. This mechanism becomes second nature after a bit of practice, but you will definitely need to familiarize yourself with it to avoid fumbling in a true life or death emergency situation.
One step up from the standard model is Ruger’s Tornado 5-in-1 pepper spray, also sold as the Ruger Ultra. This has the same setup as the 3-in-1 but also includes a strobe light and a 125-decibel alarm that automatically activates whenever the safety is released. The strobe is designed to spook or confuse an attacker, and the alarm draws the attention of anyone else in the area, making this a great option for joggers and anyone out after dark. There are instructions for deactivating the alarm to allow you to practice drawing the spray.
Ruger also makes convenient spray mounted units if you want to keep your pepper spray at home or in the car, rather than on your person. The Home Defense Wall Unit attaches to any surface (for example, the wall next to your bed), saving you from fumbling around in the dark during an emergency. Similarly, the Vehicle Defense Unit mounts on the power outlet of your car, holding your spray at the ready when you’re on the go.
For those seeking an extra-discreet option, Ruger created the Lipstick Pepper Spray. This clever design looks just like a tube of lipstick and even comes in a variety of colors, including red, pink, black, silver and blue. Even when opened, the spray nozzle looks just like a perfume spritzer. For more casual carry, the Ruger Key Chain Pepper Spray is extremely convenient. This is great for those who often forget their spray in a bag or jacket pocket. With this keychain, you always have a defense as long as you have your keys on you. It even comes in a discreet pouch so its function is not obvious.
Stun guns are not Tasers and cannot be fired from a distance, but they are still some of the most effective defenses you can carry without resorting to lethal force.
The Ruger 650V (which fires at 650,000 volts), its smallest model, is a square unit that fits in your hand and can be easily carried in a pocket or purse. It features a soft rubber outer coating and a finger-contoured grip. The safety switch, which prevents you from accidently setting it off on yourself, has an LED light so it can be easily located in the dark.
The Ruger 800V (800,000 volts) is longer and is a flashlight (with two LED lights), so it’s not as easily carried in a pocket. Instead, it comes with a wrist strap so it can be carried like one of those collapsible umbrellas, either on your wrist/belt or in a bag. The 800V also features electrodes that are pointed so they can pierce through clothes to reach skin, which is a handy feature when an attacker’s bare skin is out of reach.
The ultimate Ruger stun gun is the 1MV Flashlight (that’s 1 million volts). As the name suggests, it is an ultra-bright LED flashlight that also happens to have a built-in stun gun. Its electrodes are pointed like those on the 800V for maximum effectiveness when used on clothing. It comes with a carrying case, rechargeable battery and wrist strap if you want to take it out and about, as well as a wall charger for when you’re at home.
These stun guns and pepper sprays are great options when it’s illegal or uncomfortable to carry a firearm. Although they’re nonlethal, they may still be regulated in your locality, so check the laws before you take one out with you.
