A free self defense class offered by the La Cañada Flintridge Youth Council teaches children how to defend themselves in potentially life-threatening situations.

According to the La Cañada Valley Sun, the self defense class took place on Sunday afternoon at the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge. A group of about 20 children between the ages of 8 and 13 attended the two-hour session.

The La Cañada Flintridge Youth Council is a panel of nine high school student leaders who meet to discuss issues facing younger people in the community. The class was conceived by Mica Bernhard, 16, a council member who felt it was paramount that young people learn how to defend themselves.

“Kids in our city need to feel empowered to let the world know when they are in trouble,” Bernhard said.

As the Sun reports, the workshop was lead by Janet Goliger, a physical education teacher with the Glendale Unified School District. Goliger taught students basic moves and what to say and do in dangerous situations.

“Many kids don’t know to yell the word ‘stranger’ when being attacked, but that is what other adults respond to the most,” Goliger said.
