4 Personal Defense Flashlights

Flashlights are tools that double as a non-lethal weapon that can help ferret out bad actors, and if push comes to shove, the blast of white light can provide a moment to escape, and the bezel can hammer down on an attacker.

Distance is an advantage. A handheld flashlight not only allows you to see in the dark—where attackers tend to wait and hide—it can also be used as a weapon. Long-range flashlights allow users to see farther into the night, and the farther you are away from a threat the better chance you have to survive an encounter. Read on to learn more about four flashlights which get the job done in personal defense situations.

ExtremeBeam M4 Scirrako
ExtremeBeam M4 Scirrako

ExtremeBeam M4 Scirrako

The most impressive aspect of the M4 Scirrako by ExtremeBeam is the 1,090-foot beam it projects. The light volume output is 230 lumens. Run time for the M4 is about seven hours on the high mode, 12 hours in low and 10 hours in strobe modes. Press the click-type tailcap switch once and a laser-straight beam of white light punches a hole in darkness. Press the button again and the M4 goes black. Immediately press the button again and it goes to low mode. Press it again and the light goes into strobe mode.

The M4’s 5.9-inch length fits my fist perfectly, allowing the light to protrude out of my fist at both ends. This is important because in the case where the light needs to be used as a weapon, both ends of the light can be used to hammer down on an attacker. A good long-range flashlight will help you put distance between you and your attacker, and in the case you are jumped at close range, your flashlight can serve double duty as a weapon. The bezel end of the M4 has a 1.76-inch diameter that is scalloped.

SureFire R2 Lawman

About the same size as the ExtremeBeam M4 is the SureFire R2 Lawman flashlight. The R2 has a maximum output of 800 lumens. It features a rechargeable battery, or you can use two disposable CR1213A batteries. A Variable-Output Control switch also helps sip power, allowing users to set the light output to meet the needs of the situation. The bezel diameter is 1.6 inches, and total length is 6.7 inches. The aluminum body is built to take (and give out) punishment.

Features

* Virtually indestructible LED emitter
* Precision micro-textured reflector

Compact Options The M4 and R2 are large but not hard to carry. However, a smaller flashlight package can be a perfect compromise. The SureFire 6PX Defender offers a bezel diameter of 1.25 inches and a length of 5.4 inches, and packs a maximum white light output of 320 lumens. The tailcap switch is pressed once for momentary on; press it again for constant on, and press it a third time to it off. The 6PX Defender has a crenellated Strike Bezel, similar to a scalloped-edge bezel.

* Virtually indestructible LED emitter regulated to maximize light output and runtime
