Progressive Tactics Martial Arts — a Brownstown, Michigan-based company which teaches martial arts classes based in Tang Soo Do, Jujitsu, and Modern Arnis to children and adults — is offering a new self-defense class for women at the Brownstown Recreation Center.

According to the News-Herald, the free class is designed to teach women how to protect themselves in the event of a dangerous situation. Owner Bill Barker says students will learn four aspects of fighting: kicking, punching, trapping and grappling.

“We base our class on real-life situations,” he said. “I get a lot of feedback from women who say they are thankful for the class.

“I’ve had a woman tell me someone attempted to snatch her purse, but she was able to get her purse and not let him get away.”

As the News-Herald reports, the women’s self-defense class is based on training done taught the Michigan State Police and the FBI.

“What we do largely comes from their program,” he said.

The class will take place the first Friday of each month from 8 to 9 p.m. Visit to register.
