The tragic murder of a 45-year-old woman at the hands of her estranged husband has prompted one Louisiana Sheriff to encourage domestic violence victims to arm themselves and use lethal force if necessary.

According to WAFB, Ascension Parish Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call of a domestic dispute last Sunday at a home in Geismar, which is roughly 20 miles outside of Baton Rouge. Upon arrival, they found a shattered back door and the body of Monica Butler Johnson in the back yard.
Sheriff Jeff Wiley said Johnson had been bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat.
Johnson had taken steps within the legal system to protect herself from her husband, David, even obtaining a restraining order which was still in effect when she was killed. It wasn’t enough to protect Monica Johnson.
Now, in an interview with WAFB, Sheriff Wiley has some words of advice for victims of domestic violence.
“Use the system. Use the system. Use the system. But you know what else? Get your concealed weapons permit,” Wiley said. “Ladies, learn how to safely handle a weapon, learn how to safely store a weapon, and when you’re in a situation like this, shoot him in your back yard before he gets in your house. Drop him. I mean, I’m serious. Take the extremes necessary to live a life where you don’t have to worry about your kids and your life.”
