george, home invasion, georgia home invasion

Two men are dead after a failed home invasion in Dekalb County, Georgia last week.

According to CBS46, 28-year-old Timo Hernandez had just sat down to eat dinner with his visiting mother at his Decatur residence at around 5 p.m. when he heard a knock on his front door.

“When I opened the door, these two guys stormed in with guns and started pistol-whipping me and took me to the ground,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez’s mother tried to escape, but one of the home invaders caught up to her.

“He started pistol whipping and kicking her in the side,” Hernandez said.

During the struggle, one of the suspects demanded money. He took Hernandez into a guest bedroom, forced him onto the ground and threatened him with a gun to his head.

Fortunately, Hernandez told CBS46 he remembered that his father’s hunting rifle happened to be stored in that guest room. Hernandez managed to grab the rifle and open fire.

Both suspects were shot and fled the house. One died after collapsing in a neighbor’s yard. The other fled in a getaway vehicle but collapsed in a nearby parking lot. He was transported to an area hospital before dying on Thursday.

A bruised and battered Hernandez told CBS46 he’s grateful there was a gun in the house.

“I feel like if I hadn’t had the gun in there, this whole news story would be about me and my mother being dead in this house,” he said.

Hernandez’s mother suffered a heart attack as a result of the incident, but is expected to make a full recovery. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have health insurance, so Hernandez has started a fundraising page to help pay for her hospital bills.
