If you’re about to illegally enter a home, and the homeowner warns you that he or she has armed themselves with a shotgun, you’d probably think twice before taking another step, yet a Florida man who busted in the front door of a home in Lakeland did just that and is currently in critical condition after getting shot in the chest.

Local Fox affiliate WOFL says 66-year-old Michael Ives and his wife Charlotte were asleep at their home on Sunday when they were suddenly jolted awake just before 3 a.m. by the sound of their doorbell ringing. Alarmed, Charlotte called the police while Michael grabbed his shotgun and started talking to the person on the other side of the closed front door.

The suspect, 19-year-old Gabriel Jacobs, grew increasingly belligerent, repeatedly ringing the doorbell, yelling profanities and kicking the front door. Ives repeatedly warned Jacobs that he was armed with a shotgun and to leave his property. Jacobs ignored Ives and instead kicked in the front door.

Once again, Ives warned Jacobs not to take another step, but Jacobs disregarded this and started moving toward Ives. That’s when Ives opened fire, shooting Jacobs once in the chest.

Jacobs was conscious when paramedics arrived at the scene shortly. WOFL says he was “combative” with them as he was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

During the course of the investigation, police found multiple knocked over traffic signs near the home and a red Chevy Impala registered to Jacobs’ stepfather. The stepfather told police Jacobs had been “in possession” of the car.

Jacobs is now in critical condition at Lakeland Regional Health.

Jacobs’ older brother Eric has spoken out in support of his brother, telling WFLA that Jacob had wrecked a car and “needed help. He was looking for help.”

Eric also said the situation doesn’t look good for Gabriel.

“Right now, he is still alive. He does have a heartbeat. It ain’t looking good. It ain’t looking good at all. They got him in surgery and we are all just hanging in there praying for the best. I am hoping he can pull through this and possibly get this right with his name,” Eric stated. “He is not here to tell his side and everyone is quick to forget that. They kind of brush that off but he can’t say what happened. He is not here.”

Gabriel has a Burglary to an Occupied Dwelling charge pending against him should he make it out of the hospital.
