A convicted sex offender was shot and killed after breaking into a home in Georgia last Saturday.
According to WDHN News, the homeowner was at her residence in Blakely with her 12-year-old daughter at around 11:30 p.m. when she noticed something “unusual” concerning her daughter’s bedroom window. When she went to check it out, a man leapt out of a closet in the room and attacked her and her daughter.
A struggle ensued between the suspect and the homeowner. The police report states that the homeowner at first used a spoon in desperation to fend off the attacker. Eventually, she was able to grab hold of a pistol and open fire in self defense. The intruder was hit and ran off immediately afterwards. She then called the authorities.
“At the time she called 911, she had locked her daughter in a bedroom to be able to call 911. She wasn’t sure where the intruder was at that time after shooting him,” said Captain Will Caudill of the Early County Sheriff’s Office.
Police arrived at the scene and found the mother and daughter locked in the bedroom. They then searched the exterior of the home and located the suspect.
“They found a male subject lying in the back yard, unresponsive and suffering from apparent gun shot wounds,” said Caudill.
Sex Offender ID’d
The suspect, identified as 53-year-old Michael Lindsey, was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
WTVY reports that Lindsey was convicted of child molestation in 1999 and was listed on the Georgia Sex Offender Registry.
Police found Lindsey’s car parked behind a Budget Inn near the home, which had been burglarized twice before this incident. It’s unknown if those break-ins are connected to the home invasion.
The case has been referred to the local DA, but no charges are expected to be brought against the mother for shooting Lindsey.
