A California home invasion suspect tried breaking into not one, not two, but three separate homes before landing in the hospital in critical condition, courtesy of a man living in the third home.
Third Time’s A Charm for California Home Invasion Suspect
ABC affiliate KGO says the unidentified 47-year-old suspect descended on a street in the city of Richmond early Friday morning. He attempted to unlawfully enter two houses in the area, but was ultimately unsuccessful. He then made his way to a third home.
The suspect allegedly broke a window to gain entry to the home. The noise woke up the family sleeping inside. According to CBS San Francisco, the homeowner’s adult son managed to grab a gun and confront the intruder.
The resident opened fire on the suspect, shooting him “a few times,” police stated.
Authorities arrived on the scene shortly thereafter and took the suspect to a hospital. He is currently in critical condition with gunshot wounds in the upper torso.
“The homeowners were defending themselves,” Richmond Police Sgt. Lynette Parker said. “They were defending their property and they had to stop the threat.”
A neighbor told KGO that the suspect tried to climb his fence right before the shooting. He said he shined a light on the man, which scared him off. He then heard a loud noise, followed by two gunshots. His brother heard the same thing.
“And he was like, ‘Where did that come from?’ and I was like, ‘That was next door,'” the neighbor said. “Ten seconds later we heard five more shots.”
Another neighbor, Romona Jones, said she didn’t have any sympathy for the home invasion suspect.
“That’s what you get when you try to take other peoples property,” Jones said. “He went in their house. He shouldn’t have done that. I probably would have done the same thing.”
Police said the homeowner’s son is cooperating and is unlikely to be charged.
“He had no other choice but to defend himself and his family because the suspect had entered his home forcibly,” Parker said. “This looks as of right now as a clear case of self defense.”
The suspect reportedly has a rap sheet that includes prior home burglaries.
