An alleged car thief learned not to mess with an Alabama grandmother. She held a rifle on the suspect until police could arrive and take him into custody.

Marcia Black was sitting at the dinner table when her 15-year-old granddaughter said that a man was standing at the end of the driveway with no shirt or shoes. Not sure what was happening, Black grabbed a rifle as her granddaughter dialed 9-1-1. The man continued up the driveway, while Black stepped to the porch

“I walked out and said, ‘Can I help you?’ and he said, ‘Yes, ma’am, I’d like to use your phone,’” said Black to WAAY 31.

Don’t Mess With An Alabama Grandmother

Black continued talking to the man, but wouldn’t let him get close. However, he kept slowly getting creeping closer to the house, so Black finally told him to get on the ground. When he wouldn’t, she fired a shot in the air to let him she was serious. He got on the ground then. However, when police arrived, he took off running across a field to get away.

“He feared the deputy more than he feared my rifle,” Black said. “He jumped up and ran zig-zag right across the field.”

Officers quickly apprehended the suspect. They identified him Cameron Powers, who police had been looking for a few hours. Powers had allegedly crashed a stolen car nearby a few hours earlier. Police had been searching for the suspect, but he walked up to a house with a tough grandmother.

“I was just calm as could be, I knew what I was doing,” said the Alabama grandmother. “I was in control.”

Marcia Black just happens to be the mother of Limestone County District Three Commissioner Jason Black. The young girl is the commissioner’s daughter.

“Our jaws just dropped. We thought, ‘Wow, my grandmother is the coolest person on the planet,” Allie Ruth Black said. “This is a story that I’m going to get to tell my grandkids one day.”
