“It appears there was some gunfire exchanged,” said Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, according to click2houston.com. “The one with the shotgun was able to shoot at the three males and they were all pronounced dead at the scene.”

The three men were unknown to the residents of the local community. Officials said they believed at least one suspect brandished a pistol, according to click2houston.com.

“The other three guys are not from here, never seen them in my life. Nobody has, so we’re guessing it’s somebody from somebody else that just tried to break into a home and tried to do a home invasion,” said Cesar Lopez, who identified himself as a cousin of the homeowner, according to click2houston.com.

At least one resident in the home took a round during the gunfight, according to abcnews.go.com. Officials transported the unidentified victim to a hospital.

“We’re told it’s serious,” Gonzales told abcnews.go.com. “But he’s going to be going into surgery so we’re not exactly sure of his condition.”

“We’ll have to confirm that,” Gonzales told abcnews.go.com. “Everything is preliminary. If it turns out that that’s what they were doing – breaking into someone’s home – regardless of the circumstances, crime doesn’t pay. Eventually you’re going to end up dead or end up in jail, most likely.”
