An Indianapolis woman was recently killed in a shooting following an argument with Black Lives Matter supporters, the woman’s family claims. The fatal shooting occurred during the early morning hours of July 5.

Black Lives Matter Shooting Details

The family says the victim, 24-year-old Jessica Doty Whitaker, walked with her fiance, Jose Ramirez, and two others others. That’s when someone in their group allegedly used a racial slur, reported Fox News.

What allegedly ensued becomes a portrait of scenes taking place all across the country. Black Lives Matter supporters shouted “Black Lives Matter.” The other group countered with shouts of “All Lives Matter.” But after a brief argument, the situation seemed to resolve itself, reported Fox News. Both parties appeared to be armed, and each avoided conflict initially.

“It was squashed, and they went up the hill and left we thought, but they were sitting on St. Clair waiting for us to come under the bridge and that’s when she got shot,” Ramirez told Fox News.

A gunshot rang out from a nearby bridge, according to Fox News. The shooter allegedly ran away after firing, but the bullet found its mark, hitting Whitaker.

Ramirez said he returned fired, but failed to hit anyone, Fox News reported. The man then faced the terrible burden of telling Whitaker’s 3-year-old son what had happened.

“It’s hard to tell him his mom is in heaven and if you want to talk to her you have to look up and say, ‘I love you mom,’” Ramirez told Fox News.

Police failed to verify the involvement of any Black Lives Matter supporters at press time. The shooting marked the second homicide in the area within a week.

The fatal incident reflects tensions still raging across the country. And with a racial slur, divisive argument and guns pulled on both sides, it sounds like plenty of blame exists to go around. Unfortunately, a young mother loses her life in the incident’s terrible wake.
