Trump Supreme Court judges nominees

Nearly all gun owners engaged in the battle to save the Second Amendment know that one of the most important jobs a U.S. president has is to nominate judges for vacant seats on the Supreme Court. And, with the aging demographics on the high court, it’s likely that our next president will have the opportunity to nominate at least two, maybe more, justices that will shape the court for a generation.

Trump Supreme Court Critical to Second Amendment Protection

At the end of the day, it’s very simple. Goes without saying, but a court with a majority of justices who truly support the Second Amendment is critical. That type of Supreme Court could overturn anti-2A laws plaguing our country from coast to coast. On the other hand, a court loaded with anti-2A justices could uphold all manner of unconstitutional laws, further emboldening anti-gun groups and gun-hating politicians to pass even more restrictions with no fear of reprisal from the courts.

The 2020 election, like it or not, comes down to President Donald Trump or former Vice President Joe Biden. We already know Trump is generally pro-gun, while Biden supports a wide range of anti-gun schemes. But how would each be likely to shape the nation’s highest court?

Before the 2016 election, Trump released a list of prospective court nominees—a list, incidentally, full of Second Amendment supporters. Overall, he stuck to that list well. He nominated two staunchly pro-Second Amendment justices to the high court and hundreds to lower courts.

Trump Doubles Down on 2A

Trump recently released a new list, and again it is chock full of supporters of the Second Amendment, including U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas. In fact, the list has so many 2A supporters on it that it quickly caught the attention of the anti-gunners. The Bloomberg-funded anti-gun group Everytown for Gun Safety was among those that criticized the list.

“This list is a gift from President Trump to the gun lobby, which is relying on the Supreme Court to shore up its huge losses in the court of public opinion,” Everytown President John Feinblatt said in a press release. “Whether you’re looking at the judges he supports or the common-sense gun safety laws he rejects, it’s crystal clear that President Trump lacks both the courage and the vision to buck the NRA and put public safety first.”

Of course, if Everytown hates a list of potential judges then gun owners should generally approve of it. After all, the group constantly pushes more and more restrictive gun laws designed to hobble law-abiding gun owners.

Biden Refuses Transparency

And what about Biden? At this time, and despite pressure from constituents, Biden has refused to make his list—if he has one—public. Biden’s refusal prompted Carrie Severino to speculate on why he won’t name names. Severino is the Crisis Network President and a former law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

“The liberals he is trying to appease … are trying to pack the courts and they want judges who will rewrite those laws to a liberal end,” Severino said on “Fox & Friends” late last week. “It’s no wonder he doesn’t want to release his list because I think that list would be so radical the American people would be frightened. Joe, what are you hiding here?”

On the other side of the coin, some in the so-called “mainstream” media are hoping Biden will stay mum about the court, fearing he will marginalize some voters.

“Biden is under no obligation to dangle a list of names before the voters and subject the lawyers and judges on the list to partisan attacks,” wrote Michael McGough, Los Angeles Times senior editorial writer.

While the upcoming election has many issues that could affect the outcome, none are more important to gun owners than the Second Amendment. If you truly care about your 2A rights, get out and vote on Nov. 3.
