The Galco Change Carrier
Also known as a “blackjack” or “slapjack,” the sap has a long history, dating back to the 19th century. A club-type weapon, they typically consist of a dense, heavyweight (generally lead) attached to a short shaft. Original versions were constructed of a wooden shaft with a covered lead ball at the end. This gave the “sap” its name, due to the wood (or sapling) handle.
As the weapon progressed, sailors would weave a lead ball into the end of a short piece of rope. Since no sapling (wood shaft) was present, the weapon was often called a blackjack. The 20th century brought with it new shorter, flexible designs made out of leather, which were adopted by law enforcement. This is mostly due to its flat profile, which was easy to carry in a pocket.
The modern sap maintains the beavertail design and the end is typically filled with lead. However, creative minds present creative alternatives, and the change holder sap made its way onto the stage.
