Washington Magazine Ban Causes ZEV Technologies To Get Creative

On July 1, the sale of “high capacity” magazines (or standard capacity magazines) was no longer allowed in Washington state. The ban on “high capacity” magazines affected not only retail outlets but manufacturers as well. As a result of the ban, importing, manufacturing, and distributing magazines that hold more than ten rounds will result in fines and/or jail time. The new Washington magazine ban has ZEV Technologies getting creative.

In order to curb gun violence, Gov Jay Inslee is once again going after law-abiding gun owners. The new gun law, banning the sale of any “large capacity” magazine, is part of a larger gun control package that also includes further restrictions on so-called “ghost guns.”

According to the Guardian, “Violation of the law would be a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 90 days in jail and fines of up to $1,000. Second or subsequent violations would be a gross misdemeanor.”

A gross misdemeanor in Washington is punishable by up to 364 days in county jail and a maximum fine of up to $5,000, or both. Additionally, anyone convicted would have their concealed carry license revoked for three years.

Once again, Democrats have law enforcement chasing down lawful gun owners and manufacturers while ignoring criminals.

Attorney General Bob Ferguson initially requested the measure and now finds himself facing a legal battle. Specifically, Sullivan v Ferguson, which challenges the unconstitutional ban on standard capacity magazines. Leading the challenge is the FPC (Firearms Policy Coalition).

Ferguson is confident that the challenge will not succeed due to multiple circuit and appellate courts upholding the restrictions. However, in light of New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen, the challenge now has teeth.

The Center Square in Washington writes, “The new order from the Supreme Court requires the 9th Circuit to revisit that decision using new guidance issued by the Supreme Court in its ruling last week in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen, in which the majority held that Americans have the constitutional right to carry firearms.”

This legal battle will set a precedent that affects us all. If you would like to join this Second Amendment fight, please donate to the FPC.

ZEV Technologies Joins the Fight

Joining the challenge is ZEV Technologies, which is putting its money where its mouth is. Specifically, the company has announced that partial proceeds from every firearm sale will go directly to help fund the FPC.

As a Washington-based company, ZEV is directly affected by the magazine ban. As a result, the company can no longer include standard capacity magazines in its gun sales. Not even to out-of-state customers who are not affected by the ban.

“ZEV Technologies is extremely disappointed in the WA State Legislature for passing such an unjust law. This law greatly inhibits our unalienable rights, ability to perform business in a normal manner and service our customers without infringement. ZEV will continue to stand and fight anti 2A legislation. We are embedded for the duration of these legal battles,” said Dan Groce, Director of Brand Engagement.

Finding Creative Alternatives

Not only is the company joining the fight against anti-Second Amendment legislation, but it’s also working to make things right for its customers.

So this has led the company to join forces with another company that suffered similar legislation in Colorado—MAGPUL. As a result, in the case with your new ZEV firearm, you will find a “What’s with the 10-round magazine?” explanation and a $20 MAGPUL gift card.

We reached out to Dave Roberts, SVP, Creative and Brand Marketing for ZEV Technologies, about the program. When asked how the company came up with the idea to offer the gift card, he had this to say:

“We have always worked very closely with the good people at MAGPUL. This was something that myself and one of their guys bounced around after Washington announced the magazine ban. It’s our way of saying sorry to the consumer for something that is out of our hands. The gift card can be used for anything on the MAGPUL website. If it’s legal to purchase in the state they reside.”

Of course, this comes at a cost to the company, but it is one it finds well worth it.

“We used to ship every firearm with 2 high-capacity magazines, but now we are only allowed to ship with 10-round magazines. So, we made the tough decision to only supply one 10-round magazine, a MAGPUL gift card, and for every firearm purchased, we donate a portion to the FPC Constitution Alliance to help fight for your Second Amendment rights. This has obviously cost ZEV extra money, but we feel that it’s worth the fight.”

So, with every purchase of a ZEV firearm, you not only get a high-quality, high-performance firearm, you’re joining the fight. And a good fight it is.
